Tip #1: Know What You Want
You’d be amazed how many people in life ask for something and end up not happy with what they receive because they are so vague on their instructions. For example, if you tell a home builder that you want a 2,500 square foot home that is two stories, and this is all the details you give, then your builder will have all the freedom in the world to build you a home according to these two specifications.
In the end, though, you probably won’t be happy because there are many details that you would have left out, such as which floor you wanted your bedrooms to be on, how large you wanted your kitchen to be, etc. You have to know what you want in order to get it, so make sure you have a detailed blueprint of the home you want built printed out and ready to hand over to your custom home builder.
Tip #2: Hire a Builder that You Trust
There are two main ways to go about building a custom home: you can either go the cheap way or the right way. To go the right way, you need to make sure you hire a builder who you trust. Not just anyone can build a custom home that’s worth the money invested. When it comes to hiring the right builder, make sure you ask for references as well as check out other homes the builder has already built.
Tip #3: Don’t Be Afraid to Raise Your Voice
If you notice the builder is building a part of the home in a way that you don’t like, then speak up. After all, you are the one paying the builder, so make sure you get your money’s worth out of him or her.
Tip #4: Put Electrical Outlets Everywhere
It might seem silly, but you need to make sure that your electrician overloads your house with electrical outlets. While some people put only on one every wall, it’s highly suggested that you put two to three. This way, you’ll have plenty of options in terms of being able to move your furniture around, while at the same time having access to electrical outlets.
Tip #5: Do Some of the Work Yourself
When you build a custom home, you get to call it your own, and this is all the more reason to invest some of your time and effort into it. From painting to landscaping, there are many things that you can do yourself, and best of all, doing these things will help save lots of money.
