If you have ever lived in a home with a noisy garage door, you know just how disruptive it can be to your daily life. In some cases, you can hear the creaking and rattling throughout the entire house.
Sometimes, the door and its components have simply reached their limit and it’s time for a new door. However, this isn’t always the case and there are a few ways you can fix it so the noise is completely gone.
Tighten Things Up
It makes sense to try some of the easier fixes before you get into the complicated stuff, so take a moment to make sure every part is tight enough. Grab an adjustable wrench and check each nut along the track and the door. Tighten any loose nuts until they are snug, but try not to tighten them too much.
Spray It Down
Another potentially easy fix is to spray down the moving parts with a lubricating spray. Sometimes, the mechanism just gets a little dried out and starts making noise on you. A quick spray can calm things down without having to take anything apart. Visit your local hardware store and ask what type of spray works best for your specific brand of garage door.
Nylon Rollers
If your rollers are made of metal and start making a racket, you may want to switch them for nylon rollers. Nylon rollers in your garage door won’t make as much noise, and you won’t have to lubricate them as often. Most older garage doors are fitted with metal rollers, and while they serve a function, they will also get noisy long before a nylon roller would start making noise. Nylon rollers will cost more than steel, but if your goal is a quiet garage door they are a sound investment.
Switch Up the Hinges
As time goes on, the hinges that house the roller stem may become worn and will need replacing. This issue isn’t as common as worn rollers, but they can make a lot of noise if they do need replacing. If you see metal filings or what looks like grey-coloured dust close to the hinge pins, you may need to think about replacing them sooner than later.
Check the Chain
The chain on your garage door opener can become loose and if that happens it will make a loud slapping noise and will make the door jerk when it opens and closes. Your owner’s manual should include instructions on how to tighten the chain, so if the chain seems loose, read your manual and tighten as suggested.
If you want to keep your garage door operating in harmony with the rest of the house, a preventative approach will help you avoid any issues ion the first place. You don’t have to wait until your garage systems door is making a bunch of noise.
Every few months, check out all the parts mentioned above and lubricate all the moving parts, just to be safe. It may seem a little inconvenient, but your garage door will thank you.
