Timeless Tips to Help You With Your Basement Waterproofing

No one can refute how frustrating it is to see a flooded basement.

Regardless of which area you’re at in the United States, you’ll hear the same story about how everyone dreads the sight of a flooded basement, or so I thought.

It was my experience with the basement waterproofing in New Jersey that led me to believe that there is in fact a light at the end of the tunnel. After I’ve learned from them a couple of tricks on how to deal with a flooded basement, I was able to deal with the task systematically and as efficient as I can be.

What tricks am I talking about? Read along…

1.) Look for the source

When you see your basement flooded with water, don’t start taking the water out immediately.

Your best bet is to check the outside of your house and look for the source. Once you’ve dealt with the source and ascertained that there’s nothing adding to the water in your basement, then you can start with your efforts in taking the water out.

That way, you won’t end up wasting your time taking the water out while new water is added in your basement since the source of the water still hasn’t been dealt with.

2.) Be cautious of leaking chemicals.

Most of us store paint and other chemicals that can be very harmful to our health in the basement .

Once the water in your basement has subsided, be careful of these chemicals. Wear boots, gloves, open the windows or even wear masks. You can also check on your local jurisdiction regarding how you’ll properly dispose of these toxic chemicals.

3.) Don’t forget to wash your walls.

There’s no one-size-fits-all rule when it comes to washing your walls after a the flood has subsided. The best way to go about this is to contact your manufacturer and ask for their advice.

The main goal here is to make sure that your walls remain clean to avoid unhealthy molds from growing.

4.) Make sure that your appliances aren’t damaged.

Before you even start using your appliances, you first need to make sure that their motors aren’t damaged due to the flood.

If the water has managed to reach the motors and electrical parts of your appliances, contact a technician first and have them checked. Once they give you the go signal, that’s when you can start using the appliances.

5.) Focus on prevention

If you’ve been flooded once, then there’s no reason why it should happen to you again for the same reason. You need to make sure that you have some prevention methods in place.

Just like what we’ve discussed in point number 1, you need to check for the source of the flood. Once you’ve found the source, make sure that the solution that you’ve implemented isn’t just a quick fix.

Fix it permanently so you won’t have the same issue again. That way, you’ll save yourself the hassle of going through the entire process again, let alone spending for the restoration of your basement.

It’s your turn!
