Making the decision to re-decorate your home or renovate a place of work is no small one project. Whilst building a conservatory, orangery or utility room might add monetary value to the property, it takes a lot of work to ensure that making these home improvements pays off! One of the main things to consider is the overall aesthetic of the any space, and you’ll be surprised how much of an impression your flooring can make on your guest.
How then, should you go about choosing the right floor for your room?

Identify The Room’s Mood

The first thing to consider is the type of design and feel you’re trying to go for, as the right flooring will have a big impact on rooms overall feel. If you’re creating an office or study and trying to achieve a traditional and formal feel, then classic darker woods will reflect that vibe the best.  Alternatively, a brighter modern timber would be perfect for a creating a light and airy feel for a child’s play room.

Weigh Up the Practicalities

If you are designing a child’s playroom or a nursery, the chances are that a young child’s design preferences are going to have changed by the time they become a teenager. There is no point spending a huge amount on custom cut, luxury carpet if they’re not going to like it a year down the line.
It may seem like a waste of money at first, but if you know that you’re going to sell the property within the next year or two, depending on which floor you decide on you could potentially add value to your home.

Make Sure It Fits Its Function

Consider what it’s going to be used for.  One of the easiest ways to decide on the right flooring is to consider what that particular room will be used for.  If it will be used as a music room, then it might be wise to consider a material like thick carpet, as this will both improve the acoustics of the room as well as offering some soundproofing in consideration for the rest of the house.
A study room will be complimented from traditional solid woods which will look beautiful with classic timber furniture such as bookshelves and desks.

Have Fun with Colours

Last but certainly not least, is the colour scheme. Colours can have a huge effect on the atmosphere of your room.  Contemporary designs focus on high contrasts between dark and lighter shades, so either a very pale timber or a rich dark oak wood would be the most suitable. Traditional colour schemes will again suit timber of a slightly darker hue like mahogany.
The best way to make this choice is to simply work out what colours you really want for that particular room and then spend a little time choosing which flooring you think suits it best.
