Roofs can be made up of a variety of roofing materials that each have advantages and disadvantages. Here are the different types of roofs you could get and why you might choose each one from a well respected Vancouver roofing contractors.

Asphalt

Lasting about 20 years on average, these roofs are relatively inexpensive and durable compared to other types. They are reliable for waterproofing and come in different styles and colours. Easy to install, they’re good in a variety of temperatures though the intense sunshine and other extreme weather can wear them out before their time. With Greater Vancouver’s mild climate, this roofing material can be expected to last–some asphalt shingles can even last for up to 50 years. One disadvantage is that dark asphalt will fade over time or become discoloured.

Metal

Environmentally-friendly, lightweight, and easy to maintain–metal shingles are a solid choice. They are especially beneficial in the winter for resisting the buildup of water and ice and they can be repainted if necessary. On the downside, they can be difficult to install and will cost you more.

Slate and Tile

These two types have a natural appearance, come in different styles and colours, and are great for upscale homes. Slate and tile are fire resistant, too, and not vulnerable to rot.

With the life expectancy of slate being 100 years, the initial high price can be worth it if you intend to remain at your home for a long time. The difficulty of maintenance and gutter cleaning are downsides–slate is easily broken.

Ceramic tiles in particular are resistant to fading and should last 50 to 70 years. However, they are very fragile in windy conditions.

Flat Roofs

This is an inexpensive type that is safe to get up on but requires a lot of maintenance. Costs for repairs can be high, and their coatings are not able to last long.

Environmentally-friendly Materials

Materials such as wood shakes, slate, aluminium, and thermoplastic single-ply membrane are great for reducing the amount of energy your home uses. Wood shakes in particular can last 30 years, and thermoplastic single-ply membrane are designed to be incredibly leak proof.

If you want to make any roof type more eco-friendly, use materials that are lighter coloured as they are more reflective of the sun’s rays.
