The damp conditions experienced in many areas during the winter season provide the ideal environment for molds to grow and expand. Most often found near sources of water and while it’s growing mold can break down and compromise the integrity and strength of the source in which it lives.

Mold particles are so tiny and can’t be seen except under a microscope they are naturally present in air we breathe both indoors and outdoors. If the amount of spore growth becomes too large a person’s health could be compromised. The mold needs to be killed and removed by a qualified mold removal expert, cleaning the area is not enough to eliminate the health risk.

Home maintenance is the best way to help prevent mold growth, below are some guidelines for general home and building maintenance.

  • Keep all areas clean
  • Adequate air circulation is important and remember to use exhaust fans when cooking, washing dishes and showering.
  • Prevent mold and water damage by turning off water supply to broken appliances or pipes.
  • Replace cracked and broken mortar in basements, if you find water in the area look for the source.
  • Spread a moisture barrier in the crawl space when there’s expose soil. Heavy roofing plastic or polyethylene film are ideal for this purpose, ensure there is good ventilation and if possible enclose it. Consider installing a fan to remove humidity.
  • Humidity or dampness can be easily removed by heating the air followed by opening doors and windows or utilize a fan to remove moisture laden air.
  • Hire a professional roofing contractor to keep the elements outside by installing a tarp or tent if you find any damage to your roof.
  • Insulating pipes indoors can prevent cracks or burst pipes when the mercury dips below freezing.
  • Check all seals on doors and windows
  • Clean and repair roof gutters regularly
  • The ground around your building should slope away from the foundation to carry water away from the building
  • If you spot condensation on windows, pipes or walls act immediately to determine if it is caused by a leak or high humidity
